On March 29th, 6:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at the Vinton City Hall located at 310 A Ave. in Vinton. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss tips and advice on talking with your children before they start drinking. Learn about the Benton County Above the Influence Coalition and how you can get involved in making changes in your community and your state.

Freedom Quilts 'Made With Love To Comfort You'

      Betty Nielsen of Fonda, Iowa began this project as a response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Betty’s project has provided thousands of Freedom Quilts to be given to the 9-11 victims’ families and to soldiers’ families. Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students present 'It's about time'

Andrew Freeman sings   The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students will present the annual spring play production on Thursday and Friday, March 18 & 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tilford elementary auditorium.    This year’s theme, “It’s About Time” will showcase more than thirty talented young students and six guest performers.

VS Jazz Band learns time of State Championship performance

  The Vinton-Shellsburg High School Jazz Band knew they were heading to compete for a Jazz Band Championship before this past weekend, they just didn’t know what time they would perform in Des Moines on April 13, 2010. The high school jazz band and Director Karl Smith topped off an outstanding competition season on Saturday with a resounding 1st place finish at the Charles City Festival.

Native grasses, flowers seminar Thursday, March 18

Spring is on the way, if you want to learn about planting and managing native grasses and flowers, the Benton County IRVM (Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management) Committee will be hosting a meeting at 7:00 P.M., March 18, 2010 at the Farmer Savings Bank and Trust, 401 B Ave,(use west door).  The Iowa Coordinator of County IRVM programs, Kirk Henderson will be the featured speaker.

Polk 101 4-H Club holds march meeting in Urbana

   The March meeting of Polk 101 was held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 at the Urbana Fire Department. The meeting was called to order by Aaron Sackett, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sara Davis, and the 4H Pledge was led by Lane Benson. Roll call was “what has been your favorite vacation?”, after, the treasurer report’s was read by Cassey Farley.

Dysart Historical Society holds Fundraiser

On Sunday, March 14, the Dysart Historical Society will hold a fund raiser spaghetti dinner. It will be held at the Dysart Community Building from 10:30 A.M. .until 1:30 P.M.. The menu will include spaghetti with meat sauce, relishes, garlic and/or cheese bread, ice cream and cookie, coffee and milk. There will be a free will offering for the meal.
